For Christmas, Santa brought my daughter a [amazon_link id=”B002FQJT3Q” target=”_blank” container=”” container_class=”” ]Kindle 3G +Wi-Fi[/amazon_link]. It’s a wonderful e-reader that has suited her needs (and mine as well) better than a tablet or similar product could. The only drawback has been that she can’t checkout any eBooks from the local library. Well hold onto your hats — Amazon has announced a partnership with Overdrive that will produce Kindle support for library lending later this year. Woohoo!
Here’s the announcement: Amazon to Launch Library Lending for Kindle Books
The gist of the announcement is that library lending will be available for the Kindle and Kindle apps. Additional features will allow you to make and keep notes on the book you’re borrowed. The person who borrows the book won’t be able to see your notes but if you choose to either checkout the book again or purchase the eBook, your notes will be there. Nice feature!
On the business side, many thought Amazon would never get into the library lending fray for fear that it would undermine the sale of eBooks. Current thinking is that this may actually spur additional sales that Amazon would not normally get as users find books they’d like to have in their personal library. It’s a win for everyone.
When the product is finally released, I think it might be time for another Kindle in this house :-)
