A Little About Me

I've been writing software for over 25 years now in a variety of languages. My experience runs the gamut but is mostly rooted in UNIX-based platforms. More recently, I've taken up implementing websites using modern CMS systems such as WordPress and Drupal. I write plugins, style extensively with CSS, and fix bugs. My personal interests include photography, competitive swimming, agility training, and of course -- my dog!

2 New Tools in the Equipment Bag

We just picked up 2 new training tools for Anna to use during swim practice. Each is interesting and only time will tell if they are worth the money. The first is the Finis Tempo Trainer which works like a small metronome to help keep the swimmer on a set pace. It’s small enough to slip under the swim cap which is the recommended usage and is extremely easy to use. The second item we picked up is the Finis Freestyler hand paddles. This is an interesting item that I’m not sure about yet. Here’s a video that discusses a few different tools including the Finis Freestyler paddles:

I’ll update this post as we get more comfortable with these tools. At the moment, I’d give them both a thumbs up.

Update: April 10, 2011

I swam a set today with Anna at the local pool and part of the set involved using the Tempo Trainer on a kick set. I followed the same set as Anna (though not as fast) and found it interesting matching kick with beeps. Once I got into the rhythm, I found it easy to use the Tempo Trainer to work through my flutter kick. So far — so good — I would definitely recommend this product as a training tool.
